Should I Choose Hormone Injections or Pellet Therapy?

About Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a plant-based hormone treatment that addresses hormone imbalances by increasing your body’s levels of estrogen, testosterone, and/or progesterone. BHRT can address both acute and chronic hormone imbalances, and we offer different treatments for men and women. BHRT works by supplementing your hormone levels with chemically identical hormones derived from plants. At AsandraMD, we offer BHRT through either pellets or injections.

  • Hormone pellets: We can administer tiny pellets beneath the skin that slowly release hormones over time. These eliminate the need to return to our office to receive weekly injections or administer weekly injections at home, and they provide long-lasting improvements.
  • Injections: Alternatively, patients can administer their hormone regimen through weekly injections, either at home or in our office.

The type of hormone therapy you receive will depend on your symptoms and the type of imbalance you have.

Hormone Imbalances in Women

Menopause is a condition that occurs 12 months after a woman’s final menstrual cycle, resulting in changes in mood and energy levels. Pellet therapy can help women find long-term relief and address a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Sexual health
  • Mental fog
  • Skin health
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep quality
  • Energy levels

A common challenge during menopause is a shift in hormone ratios, including declining estrogen and testosterone levels. Women can receive pellets or injections that contain testosterone, progesterone, and/or estrogen, depending on their specific hormone levels, to achieve proper hormonal homeostasis.

Hormone Imbalances in Men

Andropause is a condition that results in chronic, age-related hormone imbalances that affect men’s quality of life. After the age of 30, testosterone levels decline by 1% each year, (1) and most men will have lost 35% of their testosterone by the age of 75. (2) Decreased testosterone levels will also result in relatively higher estrogen levels, and this can affect:

  • Muscle mass
  • Mood
  • Sleep quality
  • Weight and fat distribution
  • Intimate relationships
  • Daily performance
  • Libido
  • Mental clarity

BHRT for men can also help address gynecomastia, a condition that results in enlarged male breasts, which approximately 32-65% of men experience. (3)

Benefits

There are several benefits to BHRT, including:

  • Relief from chronic hormone imbalances: You can enjoy significant relief from symptoms of menopause or andropause and enjoy feeling more like yourself again.
  • Improved mood and mental clarity: Balancing hormone levels can reduce mood swings and improve cognitive functions.
  • Increased energy levels: You can enjoy better sleep quality and improved energy levels throughout the day after rebalancing your hormones.
  • Enhanced libido: Rebalancing your hormones can improve the quality of your intimate relationships.
  • Stronger bones and muscles: Hormones like estrogen and testosterone affect bone density and muscle strength, and balancing their levels can enhance your physical abilities and daily comfort.
  • Personalized treatment plans: We can adjust each BHRT plan for your unique needs, helping you address both chronic and acute conditions affecting your well-being.

Candidates

Anyone seeking to rebalance their hormones to address fatigue, improve their mental clarity, reduce hair loss, or more can be eligible for a BHRT regimen. Addressing hormone imbalances can also help you maintain a stable weight and address sleep quality concerns. Prospective patients need to be in good general health without any significant underlying conditions that could affect their results. They should also keep realistic expectations for their results and be willing to commit to their treatment plan.

Consultation

During your consultation, we will discuss your lifestyle, symptoms, and current medications to determine an effective treatment plan. We will also explore your medical history to check for anything that could affect the results of your BHRT. We will personalize your treatment to address your specific symptoms. During your appointment, we will take a small blood sample to analyze your hormone levels. We can also discuss additional treatments to help you address other issues simultaneously.

Treatment Process

The treatment process will depend on whether you receive hormone injections, pellet therapy, or both. On the day of your appointment, you should arrive in comfortable clothing.

Pellet Therapy

During a pellet therapy treatment, we will administer a small pellet beneath the skin on the abdomen, hip, or buttocks. Patients typically receive pellets on the hip. Although you will not be able to see or feel the pellets, they will gradually release hormones into your bloodstream. Your body will absorb them, and you can return every few months to receive new pellets.

Injections

Administering hormones through an injection is a similar process to that of a flu shot. We will cleanse and sterilize your skin and inject your BHRT dose into a chosen area, usually the arms, thighs, abdomen, or buttocks. Injections typically contain testosterone, which can help address andropause and post-menopausal symptoms. Unlike pellet therapy, which slowly releases hormones into the bloodstream over time, injections deliver a burst of hormones that rebalance your body more quickly. Some patients may be able to administer their injections at home. In these cases, we will thoroughly instruct you on how to properly administer them.

Results

After BHRT, patients notice improvements in their energy levels, mood, and intimate relationships. Since BHRT can help you address long-term conditions, receiving treatments on an ongoing basis will deliver the best results.

Most patients return to the office regularly to monitor their hormone levels, allowing Dr. Asandra to adjust their regimen as needed.

Additional Treatments

We offer several corresponding treatments to help you improve your quality of life and rebalance your hormone levels:

  • Peptide therapy is an amino-acid-based treatment that improves your health by helping your body repair vital tissues. It can also help you increase your muscle mass and/or lose weight, depending on the type of peptide therapy you receive.
  • Hair restoration can address changes to your hair from hormonal imbalances. If you are experiencing hair loss from aging, we can help you achieve thicker, denser hair with natural-looking results.
  • Anti-aging skin treatments can address fine lines, wrinkles, and laxity affecting your appearance. We offer several different treatment options targeted at raising your skin’s collagen and elastin levels.

During your consultation, we can ask about your aesthetic and health goals and whether you would like to receive additional treatments.
